Acorn Gifts

An acorn is the nut come from oak trees. It usually contains a single seed inside it's cup shaped shell with it's somewhat "hat" shaped top.

Acorns are an important food for wildlife. Smaller animals such as birds and mice feed on them. And larger ones such as deer and bears may eat them too. But the stereotypical image many have is of acorn nuts being eaten by squirrels of of squirrels hiding acorns away for the winter. Humans have been known to consume acorns too, especially amongst Native American and Korean cultures.

But acorns have a decorative appeal for the home and as clothing and accessories too. This may be due in part to the symbolic nature of the acorn. Acorns have been a symbol of luck, youthfulness, strength and prosperity. It also has become a symbol of protection based upon a Norse legend where Thor took shelter from a thunderstorm underneath an oak tree. This has led to an idea that placing an acorn on a windowsill will prevent a house from being struck by lightning. And so window blind pulls that look like acorns became popular.

For me (and perhaps for others) they also have a sort of quiet, sweet and maybe even whimsical charm.
